Of Outdoor Rinks and Volleyball…

Ahhhh winter!  Polar vortexes.   Snow flurries during the Winter Classic on January 1.   Mittens.  Gloves.   Frostbite on your fingers and toes.    Hockey weather…..

And then there is winter in Southern California.

For the past several days the Santa Ana winds have been blowing and drying everything to a crisp.  The high yesterday was 87 degrees.  It isn't going to be much cooler than that over the next few days.

Have fun professional ice guys!  This is the welcoming weather that the NHL ice team gets to put together the ice rink in Dodger Stadium in anticipation of the outdoor game on January 25 between the Ducks and Kings.

On January 1 it was 14 degrees and a snowplow would have been better suited than a Zamboni for the ice surface.

No problems with that here.  Palm trees.  Shorts and t-shirt weather.  No toques necessary.  But get your bikinis out for the beach volleyball court that will be in the outfield.  Along with the in-line skating rink and a pool.  And of course the requisite entertainment stage.

First it was the Rose Parade that brings hordes of snowed in folks out to California.  Now it will be game one of the Stadium Series confirming that it never rains in California.  (It does, I promise, just not during high profile televised events.)

Wisely the game does not start until after sun down on the 25th so the rink will actually have a chance at being ice versus the main swimming pool.

Will it be fun?  Yes.  Will it be entertaining?  Yes.  Will it be uniquely California?  Most definitely.

Wouldn't miss it for the world and it is nice to know all fingers and toes will remain intact and with feeling by the end of the game.
