Koivu and Beleskey Re-signed

Although the only major move that the Ducks have made in free agency is to trade Bobby Ryan to Ottawa, Anaheim is still getting their offseason work done.

First, the Ducks have signed center Saku Koivu to a one year contract extension, worth $2.5 million plus performance bonuses.

Koivu, 38, has spent the past four years with the Ducks and last year he scored 8 goals and 27 points in 47 games.  He led Anaheim in faceoff wins (437) and faceoffs taken (851) with a 51.4% success rate throughout the season.  Koivu scored his 800th career NHL point on Apr. 3, 2013 vs. Dallas.

“We are happy to bring back a character player like Saku,” said GM Bob Murray. “At this stage in his career, his first priority is to win, and we are happy he’s decided this is the place for him.”

The Ducks also have signed left wing Matt Beleskey to a two-year contract extension worth $2.7million.    Beleskey was one of four restriced free agents whom Anaheim made qualifying offers to.  Kyle Palmieri, Mat Clark and Alex Grant were the other three.

Beleskey, 25, was a solid fourth line player, but was also versatile enough to be moved around to different lines, depending on the need.  He scored 8 goals and13 points in 42 games last season.  He led the club in hits (103), ranked second in PIM and tied for seventh in goals, while setting career highs in goals-per-game average (.19) and points-per-game average (.31).
